Voice Recorder
What is a voice recorder?
A voice recorder captures sound from a microphone into a file you can play later. Toolshelf Voice Recorder does that in the browser: start, pause if available, stop, preview, and download. It is not an editor for files you already have — that is Audio Cutter.
How to record voice online
- 1. Click Start recording. Allow the microphone when asked.
- 2. Speak. The timer and “Recording” label show that a take is in progress; the meter is extra, not the only signal.
- 3. Pause if you see that button, or Stop when you are finished.
- 4. Preview the audio, then download. Record again replaces the take in memory (one recording at a time).
Who this page is for
Use this recorder when you need a new take from a mic, not when you already have a file to trim, merge, or pull out of a video.
- Voice notes, dictation, and short spoken clips without installing an app
- Checking that a headset mic works before a call
- Saving a take locally in whatever container the browser can write
Limitations
- One take at a time, capped at 30 minutes — not unlimited
- Output is WebM, MP4, or OGG depending on the browser — not a guaranteed MP3
- No device picker, bitrate panel, noise removal, or waveform editor in this version
- Not a file trimmer, merger, or video-to-audio extractor
Recording formats
Chrome and Edge usually produce WebM with Opus. Safari often produces MP4. Firefox may offer WebM or OGG. The download name matches that container. If you need MP3 later, convert the file in another tool after download — this page will not pretend a WebM blob is an MP3.
How does browser recording work?
After you allow the mic, the page uses getUserMedia and MediaRecorder. A small Web Audio analyser drives the level meter. The timer uses wall-clock timestamps so paused time is excluded. Leaving the page stops the stream and recorder.
Privacy
Audio never leaves this browser for recording or download. We do not log the recording or send it to a speech API. Site analytics, when enabled, do not attach audio. The current take stays in this browser so a refresh does not wipe it. Use Record again to clear that local copy. There is no history of older takes.
Voice recorder features
- Record from the microphone after you click Start (not on page load)
- Live timer plus a simple level meter so you can see activity
- Pause and resume when the browser supports it
- Preview the take in the page, then download a local file
- Shows the real format this browser wrote (WebM, MP4, or OGG)
- 30 minutes cap per recording, with a one-minute warning
- Audio stays in this browser — a refresh keeps the current take
Frequently asked questions
- How do I record my voice in the browser?
- Click Start recording, allow the microphone when the browser asks, speak, then Stop. Preview the take and download it. You can record again to replace the current take.
- Does the microphone start as soon as I open the page?
- No. The page only requests the microphone when you click Start recording. If you deny access, use Try again after you change the site permission — the page does not keep prompting on its own.
- Is my recording uploaded?
- No. Toolshelf Voice Recorder captures audio in this tab with the browser MediaRecorder API. There is no account, no cloud save, and no transcription. The current take stays in this browser (IndexedDB) so a refresh does not wipe it. Use Record again to clear it. Downloads use a temporary blob URL.
- Can I download an MP3?
- Not in this version. The file type is whatever your browser can record, usually WebM (Opus), sometimes MP4, or OGG. The page shows that real format and uses a matching filename. It will not rename a WebM file to .mp3.
- Does this work on iPhone or Safari?
- Often yes on a recent Safari or Chrome, over HTTPS, after you allow the mic. Safari may record MP4 instead of WebM. Pause may be missing. iOS Safari can be stricter about backgrounding the tab — keep the page open while you record.
- How long can I record?
- One take can last up to 30 minutes. The timer is on screen. You get a warning with about a minute left, then the recorder stops cleanly so you can still preview and download. Pause time does not count toward the cap.
- What if I refresh the page?
- The current take stays in this browser. After a reload you can still preview and download it. If you refreshed while the mic was live, you get whatever had already been captured. Record again clears that local copy. The microphone cannot keep recording through a reload.
- Can I trim a recording here?
- No. This tool only captures a new take from the microphone. To cut an existing file, use Audio Cutter after you download.
- Why is Pause missing?
- Pause and Resume appear only when this browser’s MediaRecorder supports pause. If they are hidden, use Stop when you are done.
- What if I have no microphone or permission is blocked?
- You will see a plain error and a Try again button. Check the system input device, that another app is not holding the mic, and that this site is allowed to use the microphone.
