Remove or Replace Audio in Video
What does Remove or Replace Video Audio do?
This tool edits the audio streams inside a video file. Remove audio produces a silent copy with no soundtrack. Replace audio deletes the original tracks and muxes in a file you choose — music, a voiceover, or a sound effect. Toolshelf does that in the browser so the video never leaves your device.
How to mute a video or change its soundtrack
- 1. Upload your video. Files stay on your device.
- 2. Preview duration, resolution, and how many audio tracks were found.
- 3. Choose Remove audio for a silent video, or Replace audio and add an MP3 or other audio file.
- 4. Click the primary action, preview the result, then download MP4 or WebM.
Muting versus replacing
Muting in a player only turns the volume down. The downloaded file still contains audio. This tool actually strips those streams. Replace mode does the same, then adds one new track. It does not overlay music on top of the original dialogue.
Supported formats
Video input: MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the file can be decoded. Replacement audio: MP3, WAV, AAC, M4A, OGG, and FLAC. Output is MP4 (default) or WebM. Unusual codecs or damaged files fail with a plain error.
Limitations
Very large files can exhaust browser memory. DRM-protected or unusual codecs may fail. The tool cannot isolate vocals, speech, or background music. Processing time depends on clip length, format, and your device.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I remove audio from a video?
- Upload a video, choose Remove audio, then click Remove Audio. The tool drops every audio stream and leaves a silent, playable video you can download.
- How do I replace audio in a video?
- Upload a video, switch to Replace audio, add an MP3 or other audio file, choose how to handle length differences, then click Replace Audio. Original audio tracks are removed and the new track is muxed in.
- Can I remove audio from an MP4?
- Yes. Toolshelf can mute MP4 and other common containers in your browser and export MP4 or WebM.
- Does removing audio reduce video quality?
- When the output container is compatible, the video stream is copied rather than re-encoded, so picture quality is preserved. Changing container or unsupported codecs may require a re-encode.
- Will the video duration change?
- No. The output is kept to the original video duration. Longer replacement audio is trimmed. Shorter audio is looped by default, or left to end early if you choose trim-only.
- Can I remove multiple audio tracks?
- Yes. Commentary, alternate languages, and other streams are all removed. The silent output has zero audio tracks. Replace mode leaves only the new track.
- Can I remove background music or vocals only?
- No. This tool does not separate vocals from instruments or isolate speech. It removes or replaces the complete audio track.
- Does this tool upload my video?
- No. Files are read with the browser File API and processed locally with a WebAssembly media engine. Media is not uploaded to ToolShelf servers.
- What happens if the video already has no audio?
- Remove mode skips an unnecessary conversion and lets you download the original. Replace mode still adds your soundtrack.
- Can I use this tool on mobile?
- Yes, where the browser can decode the file and has enough memory. Very large videos are harder to process on phones.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. Videos larger than 200 MB are rejected so the page does not run out of memory. This is a browser safety limit, not an account quota.
