- 2. Choose Protect or Unlock and type the password.
- 3. Download the new PDF.
Protect PDF FAQ
- What is Protect PDF?
- It adds a user password to a PDF, or saves an unencrypted copy when you type the existing password. Both jobs live on this page.
- Can you remove a password I forgot?
- No. Unlock only works with the password you already know. This tool does not crack or guess passwords.
- Is the password saved?
- No. The password is used in memory and then discarded. A draft of the file and mode can stay on this device after refresh, without the password. Toolshelf does not receive the PDF.
- Where is the hint stored?
- The optional hint is only a reminder in this browser session. It is not written into the PDF.
When to protect a PDF here
Use this when you know the password you want to add or remove.
- Protect and unlock on one page.
- Password never persisted.
- Draft file can restore after refresh.
Limitations
- Cannot unlock a forgotten password.
- Already-encrypted files must be unlocked first before adding a new password.
- Permissions beyond a user password are not a full DRM suite.
Need stamps instead of a password? Use Organize PDF. Compress afterward with Compress PDF.
