Extract Audio from Video
What is a video to audio converter?
Extract Audio from Video pulls the soundtrack out of a clip and saves it as a standalone audio file. Toolshelf does that in the browser: upload a video, preview it, choose a track and format, extract, and download. Typical uses include saving a lecture as MP3, keeping a song from a recording, or converting MP4 to audio for editing.
How to extract audio from video online
- 1. Upload your video. Files stay on your device.
- 2. Preview the clip and review duration, resolution, and detected audio tracks.
- 3. Select the audio track if the file contains more than one.
- 4. Choose output format (MP3 by default) and quality where it applies.
- 5. Click Extract Audio. Only the audio stream is processed.
- 6. Preview the result if you want, then download it.
Supported formats
Video input: MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the file can be decoded. Audio output: MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, and FLAC — the same formats Toolshelf Audio Cutter can write. We do not list formats this tool cannot actually produce.
Audio quality
For MP3, OGG, and M4A you can choose a bitrate (64–320 kbps). Default is 192 kbps. WAV and FLAC are lossless and skip bitrate controls. Matching a lossy source codec to the same output container may copy the audio stream without re-encoding. A higher bitrate than the source cannot recover quality that was already discarded.
How does browser extraction work?
After you choose a file, the page previews it with a standard video element and inspects streams with the same WebAssembly FFmpeg engine used by Audio Cutter and Audio Merger. Extraction maps the selected audio stream, drops video frames, and encodes (or copies) that audio only. The first run in a session loads the engine; your media still never leaves the device.
Privacy
Extraction does not send the file to Toolshelf servers, and we do not log filenames or media contents. Site analytics, when enabled, may record anonymous events such as “tool opened” or “extraction completed” without file names, sizes, or payloads. The current file and last extraction stay in this browser (IndexedDB) so a refresh does not wipe the session. Use Start Over to clear that local copy. Downloads use a temporary object URL that is revoked when you start over or leave the page.
Limitations
Very large files can exhaust browser memory. DRM-protected or highly unusual codecs may fail. Frame-accurate video editing is not this tool’s job — it extracts sound. Silent videos cannot produce audio. Processing time depends on clip length, format, and your device.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I extract audio from a video?
- Upload a video, wait while tracks are detected, pick an audio track and output format, then click Extract Audio and download the file.
- Can I convert a video to MP3 online?
- Yes. Toolshelf Extract Audio from Video requires no account. Extraction runs in your browser.
- Is the video uploaded to a server?
- No. The file is read with the browser File API and processed locally with a WebAssembly media engine. The video and audio are not uploaded to ToolShelf servers. The current session can stay in this browser until you click Start Over.
- Which video formats are supported?
- Common containers such as MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the file can be decoded. Unusual codecs or damaged files will fail with a plain error.
- Which audio formats can I download?
- MP3 (default), WAV, OGG, M4A/AAC, and FLAC. WAV and FLAC do not use MP3-style bitrate settings because they are lossless.
- What if my video has more than one audio track?
- The tool lists each audio stream (language and codec when metadata is present). The selected track is the one that is extracted — it does not silently always use track 1.
- What if the video has no sound?
- If no audio stream is found, extraction is disabled. The tool will not invent a silent or fake audio file.
- Does a higher MP3 bitrate improve poor source audio?
- No. Encoding lossy audio to a higher bitrate cannot restore quality that was already discarded in the original track.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. Files larger than 200 MB are rejected so the page does not run out of memory. This is a browser safety limit, not an account quota.
- Can I use this on a phone?
- Yes. Upload, preview, format selection, progress, and download are designed for touch as well as desktop.
MP4 to MP3 without uploading the video
Extract the soundtrack that already exists in a local video file. Choose MP3 for sharing, or WAV/FLAC when you need lossless. This is not a YouTube downloader.
- Local MP4, WebM, MOV, and similar containers the browser can decode.
- Multiple audio tracks when the file contains them.
- Bitrate control for lossy formats — it cannot restore a bad source.
Limitations
- No audio stream means extraction is disabled.
- DRM, streaming playlists, and page URLs are out of scope.
- File size is limited by browser memory, not an account quota.
