Audio Cutter
What is an audio cutter?
An audio cutter (or audio trimmer) lets you keep a portion of a recording and discard the rest. Toolshelf Audio Cutter is a browser tool for that job: upload a file, mark start and end, preview, cut, and download. Typical uses include trimming silence, extracting a quote, or making a short clip from a longer MP3.
How to cut audio online
- 1. Upload your audio. Files stay on your device.
- 2. Select the start and end points on the waveform or by typing times.
- 3. Preview the selection so the cut matches what you heard.
- 4. Choose output format and quality where it applies (for example MP3 bitrate).
- 5. Click Cut Audio. Processing runs locally in this tab.
- 6. Preview the result if you want, then download it.
Supported audio formats
Input: MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A/AAC, and FLAC when the file can be decoded in your browser. Output: MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, and FLAC. We do not list formats this tool cannot actually write. Some unusual encodings or damaged files will fail with a plain error rather than a technical dump.
How does the audio cutter work?
After you choose a file, the browser reads it locally, draws a downsampled waveform for navigation, and plays the original through a standard audio element. When you cut, a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg runs in a worker in this page: it trims (or splices around) the selected times and encodes the format you picked. The first cut in a session loads that engine into the browser; your audio still never leaves the device.
Is my audio uploaded?
No. Cutting does not send the file to Toolshelf servers, and we do not log filenames or audio contents. Site analytics, when enabled, may record anonymous events such as “tool opened” or “cut completed” without file names, sizes, or payloads. The current file, cut points, and last result stay in this browser (IndexedDB) so a refresh does not wipe the session. Use Start Over to clear that local copy. Downloads use a temporary object URL that is revoked when you start over or leave the page.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I cut an MP3 file?
- Upload the MP3, drag the start and end markers (or type exact times), preview the selection, then click Cut Audio and download the trimmed file.
- Can I trim audio online?
- Yes. Toolshelf Audio Cutter requires no account and no signup. Files are processed in your browser, not on a server.
- Can I cut an MP3 without uploading it to a server?
- Yes. The file is read with the browser File API and cut locally with a WebAssembly audio engine that runs in your browser. The audio is not uploaded to Toolshelf servers. The current session can stay in this browser until you click Start Over.
- Which audio formats are supported?
- You can open MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A/AAC, and FLAC when the browser and processing engine can decode them. Output formats are MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A, and FLAC. If a file cannot be decoded, choose another file or format.
- Can I select an exact start and end time?
- Yes. Use the waveform handles or the start and end fields (HH:MM:SS with optional milliseconds). End must be after start, and both stay within the audio duration.
- Can I preview the selected audio?
- Yes. Preview Selection plays from the start marker and stops at the end marker so you can hear the cut before encoding.
- Can I cut a long audio file?
- Longer files work when they fit the browser memory budget. The current limit is 80.0 MB per file. Very long clips may take longer to encode on slower devices.
- Can I download the trimmed audio?
- Yes. After a successful cut, preview the result and use Download Audio. The file is saved from a local blob URL in your browser.
- Can I use the audio cutter on mobile?
- Yes. The upload area, waveform handles, time fields, and cut controls are designed for touch as well as desktop.
- Can I cut WAV files?
- Yes. WAV is supported for both input and output. WAV export does not use MP3-style bitrate settings because it is uncompressed PCM.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. Files larger than 80.0 MB are rejected so the page does not run out of memory. This is a browser safety limit, not an account quota.
