How to calculate a percentage
- Percent of a number: multiply by the percent, then divide by 100.
- One number as a percent of another: divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. A whole of 0 is rejected.
- Percentage change: ((new − old) ÷ old) × 100. An old value of 0 is rejected.
- Discount: sale price = list × (1 − off/100), rounded to two decimals.
Limitations
- This is not a GST calculator (no CGST/SGST/IGST split) and not an EMI calculator.
- Tip split is a helper. It does not add service charge or tax unless you include them in the bill.
- Extremely large inputs (over 1 trillion) are blocked so the page does not hang.

- What can I do with this percentage calculator?

- Is this the same as a marks percentage or GPA calculator?
- No. Marks out of a paper total belong on Toolshelf GPA, Grade & Attendance Calculator. This page is everyday percentage math (including discount and tip).
- What happens if I divide by zero?
- The tool shows an error. It does not invent Infinity or silently skip the problem.
- How is a tip split when the amount does not divide evenly?
- Shares are in cents. Most people pay the floored amount; the last person pays the leftover cents so the shares always add up to the total. 0% tip is allowed.
- Are my numbers uploaded?
- No. Calculation runs in your browser. A draft of the numbers and selected mode can stay in this browser (localStorage) so refresh does not wipe the job. Toolshelf does not receive the values on a server. Use Reset to clear the draft.
- How are results rounded?
- Discount and tip use two decimal places (cents). Other percentages show up to six decimals and drop trailing zeros. Values beyond 1 trillion are rejected with a message instead of hanging the tab.
