JSON to CSV Converter
Runs in your browser — files are never uploaded or stored
Online JSON to CSV Converter
Looking for an online JSON to CSV converter? Toolshelf turns JSON arrays and objects into spreadsheet-ready CSV in your browser — no install, no signup, and no server-side file storage. Paste JSON from an API, load a local .json file, click Convert, then Download CSV.
Downloads use a temporary browser blob URL that is revoked as soon as the save starts, so the converted file is not kept on our servers or left hanging in memory longer than needed. Your data stays on your device from paste to download.
What you can do with this JSON to CSV tool
- Convert JSON arrays of objects into downloadable CSV files
- Turn a single JSON object into a one-row CSV table
- Escape commas, quotes, and newlines using RFC 4180 rules
- Flatten nested objects into dotted columns (e.g. company.headquarters.city)
- Paste JSON or load a local .json file — read only in your browser
- Download CSV via a temporary blob URL that is revoked after use
- Copy CSV to the clipboard without leaving the page
- Private by design: nothing is uploaded or stored on a server
How JSON becomes CSV
CSV is a flat table: a header row of column names, then one row per record. JSON is often nested. This converter flattens nested objects into dotted columns (for example company.headquarters.city) and turns each root object — or each object in a root array — into a CSV row. When keys differ across rows, the union of keys becomes the header, and missing fields are left blank.
Arrays of objects are expanded with indexes (departments.0.name). Arrays of strings or numbers are joined with semicolons in a single cell so skills and technology lists stay readable in Excel or Google Sheets.
Common ways people use JSON to CSV
API exports to spreadsheets
Turn REST or GraphQL list payloads into CSV for Excel, Google Sheets, or Numbers.
Database and CMS dumps
Convert JSON exports from MongoDB, Firebase, Strapi, or Contentful into tabular CSV.
Analytics and reporting
Flatten JSON report rows so non-developers can filter and chart them in a spreadsheet.
QA sample data
Generate CSV fixtures from JSON test payloads for import scripts and manual checks.
Support and ops handoffs
Share a CSV of ticket or order JSON with teammates who prefer tabular tools.
Quick one-off transforms
Avoid writing a Node script when you only need a small JSON list as CSV once.
Privacy: no upload, no stored files
Many online converters upload your JSON to a server, write a CSV to disk, and email or host a download link. Toolshelf does none of that. Parsing, conversion, and download all happen in your browser session.
When you choose a local file, the browser reads it into memory and the file input is cleared afterward. When you download, a short-lived object URL points at an in-memory blob and is revoked immediately after the download is triggered. There is no persisted copy on our infrastructure to delete later — nothing was stored in the first place.
Tips for clean CSV exports
- Prefer an array of flat objects with consistent keys for spreadsheet work.
- Validate or beautify messy JSON first with the JSON Formatter & Minifier.
- Nested company/API payloads are flattened automatically — no need to pre-process dotted keys yourself.
- Open the downloaded CSV in a spreadsheet and confirm encoding if you use non-ASCII text.
Who this converter is for
- Developers turning API list responses into spreadsheets
- Analysts who receive JSON dumps and need CSV quickly
- Anyone who wants a private, browser-only JSON → CSV path
Frequently asked questions
- What is a JSON to CSV converter?
- A JSON to CSV converter turns structured JSON (usually an array of objects) into comma-separated values so you can open the data in Excel, Google Sheets, or other spreadsheet tools.
- Do I need an account to use this JSON to CSV converter?
- No. Toolshelf JSON to CSV Converter requires no account, no usage limits, and no server-side file storage.
- Does my JSON get uploaded or stored?
- No. Conversion runs locally in your browser. If you load a .json file, it is read with the browser FileReader API only. Download uses a temporary blob URL that is revoked after the download starts. Nothing is sent to or kept on our servers.
- What JSON shapes are supported?
- Best results come from an array of objects with the same keys, such as [{"id":1,"name":"Ada"},{"id":2,"name":"Grace"}]. A single object becomes one CSV row. An array of simple values becomes two columns: index and value.
- How are nested objects and arrays handled?
- Nested objects are flattened into dotted column names such as company.headquarters.city. Arrays of objects use numeric indexes (departments.0.name). Arrays of simple values are joined with semicolons in one cell. Primitives stay as normal CSV values.
- How do I download the CSV?
- Paste or load JSON, click Convert (optional preview), then click Download CSV. Your browser saves the file locally. The temporary download URL is revoked afterward so it is not kept around.
- Will commas and quotes break my CSV?
- Fields that contain commas, quotes, or line breaks are wrapped in double quotes, and inner quotes are doubled — the usual RFC 4180 escaping spreadsheet apps expect.
- Can I convert a local JSON file?
- Yes. Use Load JSON file to pick a .json file from your device. The file is read in memory only; the file picker is cleared after reading so the tool does not retain the File handle.
- Does the JSON to CSV converter work on mobile?
- Yes. Panels stack on small screens, actions wrap, and you can still convert, copy, and download CSV on phones and tablets.
- Is online JSON to CSV safe for sensitive data?
- This tool is designed for privacy: processing stays in your browser and input is not uploaded to Toolshelf servers. Still avoid pasting secrets into any website you do not trust, and review our Privacy Policy for details.
