Date Difference Calculator
Runs entirely in your browser — no data sent to any server
Calculate the difference between two dates and times. Results show calendar difference (years/months can vary in length) and total elapsed duration (exact) separately.
Enter a start and end date/time to calculate the difference.
Online Date Difference Calculator
Looking for an online date difference calculator, date duration calculator, or days between dates tool? Toolshelf compares a start date/time with an end date/time and shows both a calendar difference and an exact elapsed duration— with no install, no signup, and no uploads. Switch to Age mode to calculate age from a date of birth on the same page.
Months are not all the same length, so this page never treats a vague “1 month” label as if it were a fixed number of days. When calendar months or years are involved — including end-of-month cases like January 31 → February 28 — you get a clear explanation beside the exact totals.
What you can do with this date calculator
- Calculate the difference between two dates and times
- Separate calendar difference from exact elapsed duration
- Show total days, hours, minutes, and seconds
- Break down years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds
- Handle end-before-start, same timestamp, leap years, and leap days
- Explain end-of-month cases such as January 31 → February 28
- Swap dates, clear inputs, and copy the full result
- Calculate age from a date of birth (Age mode) with next birthday
- Private by design: calculation runs in your browser only
Calendar difference vs total elapsed duration
A. Calendar difference answers “how many years, months, and days on the calendar?” It walks completed calendar years and months, then reports the remaining days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Because February can have 28 or 29 days and other months have 30 or 31, those months are not an exact duration unit.
B. Total elapsed duration answers “how much time actually passed?” It uses the absolute difference between the two timestamps and reports total days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Use this section whenever you need a precise span.
| Example | Calendar | Exact elapsed |
|---|---|---|
| Jan 31 → Feb 28 (same time) | 1 month (end-of-month clamp explained) | 28 days |
| Feb 29, 2024 → Feb 28, 2025 | 1 year (leap-day clamp noted) | 365 days |
| Same date and time | 0 across all units | 0 seconds |
Why month length matters
Searching for “days between dates” or “months between two dates” often hides a trap: people expect “1 month” to mean a fixed span, but calendars do not work that way. Toolshelf keeps the wording honest — calendar months for human-readable breakdowns, exact totals when precision matters — and surfaces notes when clamping or leap days affect the calendar path.
Common use cases
Project and sprint planning
Measure how many calendar months or exact days remain between kickoff and a deadline without treating “1 month” as a fixed 30-day block.
Age and tenure calculations
Express someone’s age or employment tenure as years, months, and days while still seeing the exact elapsed duration.
SLA and uptime windows
Convert an outage or support window into total hours and minutes for reports, using the real timestamp span.
Travel and event timing
Compare departure and arrival local times, including overnight trips and same-day schedules.
Contract and invoice periods
Check billing periods that start mid-month and end on short months without guessing month length.
Debugging time bugs
Verify leap-day and daylight-saving edge cases when dates look “one month apart” but the day count disagrees.
How to use the date difference calculator
- 1Enter the start date and start time.
- 2Enter the end date and end time (before or after the start).
- 3Read the direction sentence, then compare A. Calendar difference with B. Total elapsed duration.
- 4Use Copy result, Swap dates, or Clear as needed. For age from a date of birth, switch to Age mode, enter the date of birth and an as-of date, then copy the years, months, days, and next birthday.
Privacy-first date calculation
Some online calculators send every date to a server. Toolshelf calculates locally in the browser, which is better for private schedules, contracts, and personal dates. After the page loads, the math does not require another network round-trip.

Tips for reliable date math
- Prefer exact elapsed totals for SLAs, billing minutes, and engineering metrics.
- Use calendar years/months only when you intentionally want anniversary-style counting.
- Watch end-of-month starts (the 29th–31st): the next “month” anniversary may clamp to a shorter month.
- Need epoch seconds instead of calendar math? Try the Unix Timestamp Converter.
- Parsing ISO strings with Z or offsets? Use the ISO 8601 Converter.
- Scheduling recurring jobs? Use the Cron Expression Generator.
Who this calculator is for
- Project managers counting working windows and deadlines
- Developers verifying leap-day and DST edge cases
- Anyone comparing two local dates without uploading them
Frequently asked questions
- What is a date difference calculator?
- A date difference calculator finds how far apart two dates and times are. This tool reports both a calendar breakdown (years, months, days, and time) and an exact elapsed duration (total days, hours, minutes, and seconds).
- What is the difference between calendar difference and total elapsed duration?
- Calendar difference counts completed calendar years and months, then the remaining days and time. Months are not a fixed length, so that breakdown is not an exact duration. Total elapsed duration uses the real millisecond span between the two timestamps and is exact.
- How does January 31 to February 28 work?
- Adding one calendar month to January 31 lands on the last day of February (28 or 29) because February has no 31st. The tool may show that as one calendar month and explains the end-of-month clamp. The exact elapsed duration still shows the true day count (for example, 28 days).
- Do I need an account to use this date difference calculator?
- No. Toolshelf Date Difference Calculator requires no account, no usage limits, and no uploads.
- Does my date data get uploaded to a server?
- No. Parsing and calculation run locally in your browser. Your start, end, and date-of-birth values stay on your device. A draft may be saved in this browser’s local storage so refresh does not wipe the job; nothing is uploaded.
- Can the end date be before the start date?
- Yes. The tool always shows the absolute difference and states whether the end date is after or before the start date.
- What happens if both timestamps are the same?
- All totals are zero and the direction reads that the end date is the same as the start date.
- Are leap years and leap days supported?
- Yes. February 29 is accepted in leap years. When a leap-day start date is stepped into a non-leap year, calendar arithmetic clamps to February 28 and the tool explains that clamp.
- How are daylight-saving transitions handled?
- Elapsed duration uses JavaScript Date instants in your local timezone, so a 23-hour or 25-hour local day changes the total hours correctly. Calendar steps still follow local wall-clock date parts.
- Does the date difference calculator work on mobile?
- Yes. Inputs stack on small screens, actions stay tappable, and results remain readable without horizontal scrolling.
- Can I calculate age from date of birth?
- Yes. Switch to Age mode (or open this page with ?mode=age). Enter a date of birth and an as-of date (today by default). The result uses the same calendar years, months, and days as date difference, plus total days and the next birthday. Dates stay in this browser only; they are never put in the URL.
- How are February 29 birthdays counted?
- Leap-day birthdays are accepted. In a non-leap year the calendar anniversary clamps to February 28 — the same end-of-month rule as date difference — and the next-birthday date follows that clamp.
