777 vs a safer mode
World-writable modes such as 777 are usually wrong on a web root. Prefer 755 for directories and 644 for files. For cron expressions see the cron expression editor.
Chmod calculator FAQ
- What is a chmod calculator?
- A chmod calculator converts Unix file modes between checkboxes, octal (755), and the symbolic rwxr-xr-x string, and shows a chmod command you can copy.
- What is the difference between 755 and 644?
- 755 (rwxr-xr-x) lets the owner read, write, and execute; group and others read and execute. 644 (rw-r--r--) is a typical file: owner read/write, everyone else read-only.
- What does setuid do?
- The setuid bit (leading 4, as in 4755) makes an executable run with the file owner’s user id. It appears as s in the owner execute position (rwsr-xr-x).
- Does this work on Windows?
- The numbers are Unix/Linux modes. Windows ACLs (icacls) are different. The page does not change permissions on your machine.
- Will this change files on my server?
- No. Toolshelf only shows the chmod command. You still run it yourself over SSH or in a terminal.
