- Refresh keeps a local draft of the file and options on this device

- 2. Choose Split, Extract, or Remove, then set ranges or tap page numbers.
- 3. Download the PDF or ZIP.
Split PDF FAQ
- What is a split PDF tool?
- A split PDF tool takes one PDF and turns it into smaller PDFs: equal chunks, custom ranges, extracted pages, or a copy with some pages removed. Toolshelf Split PDF does this in the browser.
- Do extract pages and remove pages need their own sites?
- No. Extract and remove are modes on this Split PDF page. Bookmark /tools/split-pdf; older names redirect here.
- Are my PDFs uploaded?
- No. Splitting runs on your device. A draft of the file and your options can stay in this browser (IndexedDB) so refresh does not wipe the job. Toolshelf does not receive the PDF on a server. Use Reset to clear the draft.
- When do I get a ZIP?
- When split or extract produces more than one PDF (for example every page, or several ranges). One extract or one remainder file downloads as a single PDF.
- How do custom ranges work?
- Use 1-based page numbers such as 1-3,5,8-10. Each comma-separated group becomes its own PDF. Invalid or reversed ranges are rejected with a message — pages are not silently truncated.
- Can I split a password-protected PDF?
- Not until it is unlocked with the known password. This tool does not remove unknown passwords.
- Is this the same as merge PDF?
- No. Merge combines several files into one. Split takes one file apart. Use Toolshelf Merge PDF if you need the opposite job.
When to split a PDF here
Use in-browser split when you need a chapter, a few pages, or a file without extra sheets — without sending the document to a merge website.
- One PDF in; ZIP if you produce several files.
- Extract and remove are modes on this page.
- Draft can stay in this browser after refresh.
Limitations
- Password-protected files are rejected.
- This does not merge PDFs — use Merge PDF.
- It does not rotate or crop; that is Organize PDF later.
