Typing Test & Practice
Touch typing needs a physical keyboard. This screen still runs a speed check.

What is this typing test?
Toolshelf Typing Test & Practice is a browser typing studio: a speed test, a touch-typing path, and a live keyboard in one page. It is built for how people type now — mail, docs, URLs, numbers, and code — not only pangrams. Nothing you type is uploaded.
The on-screen board is the instrument. It lights the next key, the Shift you should use for a capital, and the key you missed. That is different from a static picture of a keyboard under a tiny text box.
What you can practice
- Typing speed test (15, 30, 60, or 120 seconds) that starts on the first key
- Live visual keyboard: next key, press, error, home-row bumps, Caps Lock
- Foundation path from home row to numbers, symbols, URLs, and opposite Shift
- Adaptive drills from your local weak keys and bigrams
- Code mode for camelCase, brackets, and operators
- Custom paste — practice your own text in this browser only
- WPM, accuracy, and smoothness (interval consistency) without an account
- Layouts: US QWERTY, UK QWERTY, Colemak, and Dvorak
How to learn faster typing
- Accuracy before speed. A 120 WPM run at 70% accuracy is noise.
- Keep eyes on the screen. Hide the board once home row feels boring.
- Return to F and J after every stretch and after Space.
- Use opposite Shift: Right Shift for left-hand letters, and the reverse.
- Train common pairs (th, he, in) — English speed lives in bigrams.
- Practice the characters you actually type at work: @, URLs, camelCase.
This is a practice tool, not a medical device or an accredited course. Comfortable posture helps; we do not diagnose injury.
Limits
There is no multiplayer race, no cloud sync, and no webcam hand tracking. Split and ortholinear boards are shown as a standard ANSI/ISO frame. Refresh restores settings and history, not a raw keystroke log of an unfinished test.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this typing test free? Do I need an account?
- Yes. Toolshelf Typing Test & Practice is free in the browser. There is no signup, leaderboard account, or subscription.
- Does my typing leave the browser?
- No. Keystrokes, custom pasted text, heatmaps, and history stay in this browser (localStorage). Analytics, if present, never include what you typed or your WPM.
- How is WPM calculated?
- Net WPM is (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, including errors. Accuracy is correct ÷ (correct + incorrect + extra). Smoothness is based on how even your key intervals are; pauses longer than two seconds are ignored.
- Can I learn touch typing here, or is it only a speed test?
- Both live on one page. Test is the default for search visitors. Learn is a skill path (home row through symbols and URLs). Drill rebuilds short bursts from your weakest keys. You can take a test without finishing the path.
- Why is there a picture of a keyboard?
- It is not a photo. The board is live HTML keycaps. The next character glows, the key you press depresses, and a miss flashes the key you hit. Clicking a key does not count as typing — that would teach clicking, not typing.
- Can I practice coding symbols and camelCase?
- Yes. Open Code and pick TypeScript, JSON, HTML, SQL, CSS, or shell. Snippets are text to type, not programs to run.
- Can I paste my own text?
- Yes, in Custom mode, up to 8,000 characters. If you paste more, the tool refuses the paste and tells you — it does not cut silently. Do not paste passwords. Toolshelf does not upload the text.
- Does it work on a phone?
- You can run a short speed check with the software keyboard. Touch typing (ten-finger, eyes on the screen) needs a physical keyboard. The page says so instead of faking a laptop tutor on a 320px screen.
- QWERTY vs Colemak or Dvorak?
- Settings include US QWERTY, UK QWERTY, Colemak, and Dvorak. The legends follow the layout you pick. Tests score the character your operating system produced, so the OS layout should match.
- Why did Caps Lock ruin my accuracy?
- Caps Lock inverts letters without the opposite-Shift habit you are training. The Caps key lights and a chip appears when it is on. Turn it off and continue.
- Is there a global leaderboard?
- No. Personal bests are compared only to history in this browser, and labeled that way. Multiplayer races would need a server, which this tool does not use.
- Will refresh erase my progress?
- Refresh restores settings, lesson progress, heatmap, history, and custom text. An in-progress test does not replay every keystroke after reload — that would mean storing a raw key log. Reset is a separate control.
