HTTP status codes FAQ
- What is the difference between 401 and 403?
- 401 Unauthorized means authentication is missing or failed. 403 Forbidden means the server understood who you are (or does not care) and still refuses the resource.
- Does Basic Auth use UTF-8?
- This page encodes username:password as UTF-8 then Base64. Classic HTTP Basic was often Latin-1. ASCII usernames match the RFC example Aladdin:open sesame.
- Is the MIME list complete?
- No. It is a common-types snapshot in this repo, not a live IANA fetch. Search by extension (.json) or type (application/json).
- Are passwords stored?
- No. Toolshelf does not persist the Basic Auth password. Username, search queries, and the selected mode can stay in this tab’s session storage.
- Can this send HTTP requests?
- No. It looks up snippets. It is not a live HTTP client (CORS and servers are a different product). For generic Base64 see the Base64 encoder.
