Video Cutter – Cut & Trim Videos Online
How to cut a video online
A video cutter keeps only the section you choose and discards the rest. Toolshelf Video Cutter does that in the browser: you pick a start time and an end time, preview the selection, then download a new file that contains just that range.
How to use the Video Cutter
- Upload your video.
- Choose the start point.
- Choose the end point.
- Preview the selected section.
- Click Cut Video.
- Preview and download the result.
Supported video formats
Input: MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the browser processor can decode the file. Output: MP4 or WebM. If a codec is unusual or the file is damaged, you will see a plain error instead of a broken download.
Does the video get uploaded?
No. Your video is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our servers. The current file, trim points, and last result stay in this browser (IndexedDB) so a refresh does not wipe the session. Use Start Over to clear that local copy. We do not log filenames or media contents. Site analytics, when enabled, may record anonymous events such as “tool opened” or “processing completed” without file names, sizes, or payloads.
Limitations
Large videos may take longer to process and can use significant browser memory. Cuts copy the original streams when possible, so they may start or end on a keyframe rather than an exact frame. Re-encoding is used only if stream copy cannot produce a valid file. This tool does not merge clips, add effects, or import YouTube URLs.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I cut a video?
- Upload a video, set the start and end times, preview the selection, click Cut Video, then preview and download the result.
- Can I trim an MP4 video?
- Yes. Toolshelf Video Cutter can trim MP4 files in your browser and export MP4 or WebM, with no signup.
- Can I cut a video without uploading it?
- Yes. The file is read with the browser File API and processed locally with a WebAssembly media engine. The video is not uploaded to ToolShelf servers. The current session can stay in this browser until you click Start Over.
- Do I need an account to use the Video Cutter?
- No. There is no signup and no account. The tool runs in your browser.
- What video formats are supported?
- Common containers such as MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the file can be decoded. Output is MP4 or WebM. Unusual codecs or damaged files will fail with a plain error.
- Can I use the Video Cutter on mobile?
- Yes, where the browser can decode the file and has enough memory. Use the time fields if dragging the timeline is awkward on a small screen.
- Does cutting reduce video quality?
- Cutting copies the original video and audio streams whenever the output container allows it, so quality is not reduced by re-encoding. Keep MP4 output for MP4/MOV files (or WebM for WebM). Changing container, or files that cannot be stream-copied, may require a high-quality re-encode. Cuts may start or end on the nearest keyframe.
- How large can my video be?
- Videos larger than 200 MB are rejected so the page does not run out of memory. This is a browser safety limit, not an account quota. Large videos can still take a long time and use significant memory.
When to use this video cutter
Use it when you already have a video file on your device and you need a shorter clip — intros, WhatsApp limits, or a demo excerpt. Prefer this over upload-based sites when the recording should not leave your computer.
- Local MP4, WebM, MOV, and similar files you can choose from disk.
- Quality-preserving stream copy when the output container allows it.
- No YouTube URL import and no account wall.
Limitations
- Cuts may align to keyframes when streams are copied.
- Very large files can exhaust browser memory — size limits are shown in the tool.
- This is not a subtitle editor, watermark remover, or streaming downloader.
