Online notepad and browser text editor
This Toolshelf page is an online notepad for quick writing: meeting notes, drafts, paste buffers, and checklists. It is a browser notepad, not a cloud document suite. You do not create an account, and the text you type is not uploaded to a Toolshelf server.
If you searched for an online text editor, notepad online, or private notes that stay on your device, this tool is meant to stay out of the way: a large editor, local autosave, search, and a download button.
What is an online notepad?
An online notepad is a text editor that runs in a web page. Unlike email drafts or office apps, this version keeps a plain-text area in focus and stores notes in the browser you are using. That makes it useful when you want to jot something down without installing software or signing in.
How to use this online notepad
- 1Click the editor and start typing, or paste existing text. The placeholder reads “Start typing or paste your text here…”
- 2Wait for Saved in the toolbar. Refresh the page on the same browser to confirm the note returns.
- 3Use Find (Ctrl or Cmd + F) and Replace (Ctrl or Cmd + H) when you need to jump through a long draft.
- 4Copy, print, or download TXT / Markdown when you need a file. New Note and Clear ask for confirmation if the editor is not empty.
Are my notes stored online?
No. “Stored online” would mean a Toolshelf account or a remote database. This notepad writes to localStorage in this browser. Another device, another browser profile, or a private window will not see those notes unless you copy or download them.
Where are my notes saved?
Notes live under a versioned local storage entry named for this tool. Each note keeps an id, title, content, and timestamps. The page never puts note bodies in the URL, analytics events, or cookies. If storage is blocked or full, you can keep editing in memory; the status changes to Storage unavailable instead of deleting what you just typed.
Can I use it without an account?
Yes. There is no sign-in gate. Online notes here means the editor is usable as soon as the page loads. The tradeoff is that Toolshelf cannot restore notes on a new phone unless you bring the text with you.
Can I download my notes?
Yes. Download TXT and Download Markdown both create a local file from the current editor contents. Print opens the browser print dialog with only the note text, so you can also save as PDF from there if your browser offers it.
Can I use it on mobile?
Yes. The editor scrolls inside the tool pane, toolbar buttons wrap on small screens, and word wrap is on by default so the page itself should not scroll sideways. Turn wrap off only when you need long unbroken lines — scrolling then stays inside the editor.
Is my data private?
Note content is processed in the browser and is not uploaded to Toolshelf. Privacy still depends on the device: anyone with access to this browser profile can open the same page and read local notes, and clearing site data removes them. For cookies and advertising partners, see the Privacy Policy.
What you can do in this notepad
- Write and edit notes in a large, distraction-free text editor
- Autosave to this browser so a refresh does not wipe your draft
- Create, rename, and delete multiple local notes
- Find, replace, and replace all with match-case and whole-word options
- Copy, print, and download TXT or Markdown — no server involved
- Live word, character, line, and reading-time statistics
- UPPERCASE, lowercase, Capitalize, trim, and spacing clean-up
- Focus mode, font size, and word-wrap controls
Limitations
This is a plain-text notepad, not a rich-text word processor. Autosave cannot survive a full storage clear, a different browser, or a quota error. Find highlights the current match in the editor rather than painting every hit. Very large pastes remain editable; statistics update after a short pause so typing stays responsive.
Frequently asked questions
- What is an online notepad?
- An online notepad is a browser text editor for drafts, lists, and notes. This Toolshelf notepad runs on the page you already opened — you type locally, without creating a document in a cloud account.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Toolshelf Online Notepad requires no account. There is no signup. The editor is available as soon as the page loads.
- Are notes automatically saved?
- Yes. After you pause typing, the current notes are written to this browser’s localStorage. The status line shows Saving… or Saved. If the browser blocks storage, the editor still works in memory and shows Storage unavailable.
- Where are notes stored?
- Notes are stored only in this browser’s local storage on this device, using a Toolshelf-specific key. They are not kept in the page URL and are not written to a Toolshelf database.
- Are notes uploaded to a server?
- No. Typing, search, replace, statistics, copy, print, and download all run in your browser. Note text is not sent to Toolshelf for storage or processing.
- Can I use it without an account?
- Yes. Open the page and start typing. No login is required to write, save locally, search, or download.
- Can I download notes?
- Yes. Download TXT saves note.txt. Download Markdown saves the same text as note.md. Both files are generated in the browser with no upload step.
- Can I use it on mobile?
- Yes. The editor, toolbar, find bar, and statistics are laid out to work on phones and tablets. Some browser chrome still appears around the page, which is expected.
- What happens if browser data is cleared?
- Clearing site data, cookies and site storage, or using a browser reset can delete local notes. Private windows may also refuse or wipe storage when the window closes. Download a copy if you need a file you control.
