Video to GIF Converter
What is a video to GIF converter?
A video to GIF converter turns a short section of a clip into a looping GIF. Toolshelf does that in the browser: upload a video, preview it, pick start and end times, choose FPS and size, convert, then download. Typical uses include reactions, memes, simple product demos, and small website snippets — not long-form video.
How to convert video to GIF
- 1. Upload your video. Files stay on your device.
- 2. Select the start and end time (up to 15 seconds).
- 3. Choose GIF size. Height follows the original aspect ratio.
- 4. Choose FPS (15 is the default).
- 5. Click Convert to GIF.
- 6. Preview the looping GIF, then download it.
What video formats can I convert?
MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the browser engine can decode the file. We do not claim every codec in those containers will work. DRM-protected or damaged files will fail.
Can I convert MP4 to GIF?
Yes, when the MP4 can be decoded. The same is true for WebM and MOV in many cases. Conversion uses a palette-based GIF pipeline so colors stay as stable as GIF allows — GIF still cannot match modern video quality.
Why GIFs get large
Each GIF frame is an image. Raising resolution, FPS, or duration multiplies that work. A few seconds of HD GIF can outweigh a much longer MP4. Keep the range short, and prefer Balanced or Smaller file unless you need extra detail.
How does browser conversion work?
After you choose a file, the page previews it with a standard video element and inspects streams with the same WebAssembly FFmpeg engine used by Extract Audio, Audio Cutter, and Audio Merger. The selected range is scaled, a color palette is generated, then frames are encoded as GIF. The first run in a session loads the engine; your media still never leaves the device.
Privacy
Conversion does not send the file to Toolshelf servers, and we do not log filenames or media contents. Site analytics, when enabled, may record anonymous events such as “tool opened” or “conversion completed” without file names, sizes, or payloads. The current file, GIF settings, and last result stay in this browser (IndexedDB) so a refresh does not wipe the session. Use Start Over to clear that local copy. Downloads use a temporary object URL that is revoked when you start over or leave the page.
Limitations
Very large files and long, high-FPS GIFs can exhaust browser memory. Unusual codecs may fail. This tool does not import YouTube URLs and does not replace a video editor. GIF color depth is limited compared with the source video.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert a video to GIF?
- Upload a video, set the start and end time, choose size and FPS, click Convert to GIF, then preview and download the result.
- Can I convert MP4 to GIF online?
- Yes. Toolshelf Video to GIF Converter can turn MP4 (and other supported containers) into a GIF in your browser, with no signup.
- Is the video uploaded to a server?
- No. The file is read with the browser File API and converted locally with a WebAssembly media engine. The video is not uploaded to ToolShelf servers. The current session can stay in this browser until you click Start Over.
- What video formats can I convert?
- Common containers such as MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, AVI, MPEG, and OGV when the file can be decoded. Unusual codecs or damaged files will fail with a plain error.
- Can I create a GIF from only part of a video?
- Yes. Choose a start and end time. GIF duration is capped at 15 seconds so the file stays practical in a browser.
- Why is my GIF larger than the original video?
- GIF is a frame-based image format with a limited color palette and weaker compression than modern video codecs such as H.264 or VP9. Short clips still help, but a GIF is often larger than the same seconds of MP4.
- Can I create a GIF from a YouTube URL?
- No. This tool only converts a video file you choose on your device. It does not fetch or convert YouTube (or other) URLs.
- Is GIF a replacement for video?
- No. GIFs are useful for short animations, reactions, memes, and simple demonstrations. They are a poor substitute for longer video because file size grows quickly with duration, resolution, and FPS.
- Is there a file size limit?
- Yes. Videos larger than 200 MB are rejected so the page does not run out of memory. This is a browser safety limit, not an account quota.
- Can I use this on a phone?
- Yes, where the browser can decode the file and has enough memory. Keep clips short and resolution modest on phones.
When MP4 to GIF is the right job
Convert a few seconds of a local video into a looping GIF for chats, docs, or bug reports. Keep width, FPS, and duration modest. GIFs are a poor substitute for sharing a full video.
- Short clips from MP4 and other files on your device.
- Start/end times so you do not convert the entire file.
- No YouTube URL fetch — you choose the file.
Limitations
- GIF files are often larger than the same seconds of MP4.
- Duration is capped so the browser stays usable.
- This is not a watermark remover or site-to-GIF downloader.
