How to Compare Text Online

Practical tips for comparing two versions of text, reading diffs, and catching wording changes without uploading documents to a server.

Why side-by-side compare helps

Comparing two drafts by eye is slow and error-prone. A text diff highlights added, removed, and changed lines so you can focus on what actually changed — useful for copy edits, config tweaks, and policy revisions.

A simple workflow

Use a private, browser-based compare tool when the text should not be uploaded.

  • Paste the original text on the left and the revised text on the right.
  • Run compare to highlight differences.
  • Optionally ignore whitespace if you only care about wording.
  • Swap panels if you need to reverse the direction of the diff.

Tips for cleaner diffs

Keep related sentences on their own lines when possible. Large paragraph reflows can produce noisy diffs even when the meaning barely changed. For structured data, format JSON first so structural edits stand out clearly.
